The countdown to winter has begun as nature signals its arrival with fog, dew drops, and cool breezes in parts of the country, marking the retreat of the monsoon.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) confirmed that the southwesterly monsoon has withdrawn from Bangladesh, except for the Chattogram region, as of Sunday. It is expected to fully withdraw by Monday.
Monowar Hossain, a meteorologist at the BMD, told the Daily Sun that while the monsoon would have completely exited by Monday, scattered rain might still occur across the country over the next few days.
He stated that temperatures in the northwestern and northern parts of Bangladesh might start to drop by the last week of October, while other regions could begin experiencing cooler temperatures starting in November.
As the days shorten and temperatures fluctuate—warmer during the day and cooler at night—the signs of an early winter are particularly noticeable in the northern region.
Bangladesh, known for its six distinct seasons, sees winter last for only two months, December and January, making it a season eagerly anticipated by many.
While some embrace winter as a time for festivals and romance, others, especially those living in poverty, struggle to endure the cold.
In rural areas, the gentle cool winds and fog serve as a reminder of the approaching winter, particularly in the northern parts of the country.
Monowar Hossain mentioned that the cold wave, which typically occurs in December, January, and February, would closely be monitored, with forecasts expected next month.
Additionally, the BMD reported the likelihood of a low-pressure area forming over the Southwest Bay of Bengal in the next 48 hours.
This could bring temporary gusty winds, rain, or thunderstorms to parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions, with moderate rainfall possible in some areas.
