Seven councils of Awami League and its associate organisations are likely to be held in December at one stage to reduce the expense of these big events as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged the countrymen to maintain austerity fearing global economic recession in 2023.
Besides Awami League (AL), other organisations are Chhatra League, Jubo Mohila League, Mohila Awami League, Tanti League, Dhaka North City Awami League and Dhaka South City Awami League.
Party insiders said the national council of Awami League would be held in December. However, the date of the national council is yet to be finalized. The Executive Council of the party will sit in a meeting at Ganabhaban on October 28 with 11 agendas including fixing the date of the central council. The dates of the six other councils will also be fixed in the meeting.
Several leaders of the policymaking body of the party said the upcoming meeting will be a different one as the meeting will take many important decisions including holding the 22nd national and other councils.
On the other hand, many decisions about Rangpur City Corporation election and BNP’s movement will also be discussed in the meeting.
According to the party sources, Awami League chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged all to maintain austerity during this global economic crisis triggered by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. To comply with this instruction, the party have decided to hold all seven councils at a stage to cut cost.
Usually, Awami League and its associate bodies expense a good amount of money during their councils. This time, they will maintain austerity by holding all councils at a stage.
Contacted, Awami League Presidium Member Abdur Rahman told Bangladesh Pratidin that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is monitoring the situation by curbing decorations and other illuminations to save money. For this reason, upcoming all councils might be held at a stage.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister, also the general secretary of the party, has already instructed the Awami League office secretary to prepare at least 10 sub-committees told to hold the central council.
According to tradition, there will be a council preparatory committee, announcement, office, publication and publicity, volunteers and discipline, stage and decoration, constitution, cultural, food and health sub-committees.
