The number of patients admitted with dengue fever is increasing in the capital's hospitals and the death toll is also on the rise.
Till Friday, a total of 1, 725 people were undergoing treatment in 50 hospitals in Dhaka dengue.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), a total of 637 dengue patients were detected on Thursday which is the highest this year. With this, the number of dengue patients admitted to hospitals across the country has reached 2, 282.
From January 1, 2022, to last Friday, a total of 19, 523 dengue-affected people were admitted to the hospital. Among them 17, 177 patients have been discharged from the hospitals after recovery. On the other hand, a total of 64 people died due to dengue this year.
Dr Md Niyatuzzaman, acting director of Mugda Hospital told Bangladesh Pratidin that the number of patients admitted with dengue fever is increasing in the capital's hospitals. When a patient arrives, doctors monitor his physical condition. If his condition is serious then doctors admit him to the hospital. If the physical condition is comparatively stable, a prescription is given for treatment at home.
“We treat dengue patients following the guidelines of the DGHS. If someone is infected, our suggestion is don't stay at home, come to the hospital. Taking treatment with a doctor's advice reduces the death risk. Death is more common among patients who come to the hospital late without treatment,” he said.
Prof ABM Abdullah, emeritus professor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) told Bangladesh Pratidin that a dengue test must be done if a fever occurs. If the dengue test report is positive, one should consult a doctor.
“Fluids play a vital role in the treatment of dengue patients. One should drink enough liquid food. No one should buy antibiotics from a pharmacy without a prescription,” he observed.
