The government has imposed a 22-day ban on hilsa fishing from October 7-28.
During the period, Hilsa catching, hoarding, selling and transporting will remain prohibited to ensure the safe spawning of the fish during its peak breeding period.
The Fisheries and Livestock Ministry said the objective of the restriction on fishing is to save the mother hilsa which lays eggs during the period and to save the fishermen.
Marine police, coast guard and law enforcement agencies will work together to implement the ban drive.
The government will provide VGF rice among the fishermen during the period as compensation.
According to the department of fisheries, at present, Bangladesh produces 565,000 metric tonnes of hilsa which might cross 600,000 metric tonnes after the drive.
