Dealing with an oily scalp can be uncomfortable and frustrating, especially after a long hair wash routine that includes oiling, masking, shampooing, and conditioning. While those first few days may leave your hair feeling fresh, it’s not long before the grease returns, leaving you hesitant to wear your hair down.

For people with oily skin—yes, the scalp is an extension of your skin—this struggle is all too familiar. So when a new beauty hack surfaced on Instagram suggesting that brushing your scalp with a toothbrush could help remove excess oil, many took notice. But does this technique really work, or is it just another viral trend with potential risks?

The science behind oily scalp

An oily scalp is primarily caused by an overproduction of sebum from sebaceous glands, a condition influenced by factors like genetics, hormones, diet, and environmental changes. While sebum is essential for keeping the scalp moisturized and protected, too much of it can lead to issues such as dandruff, itching, clogged hair follicles, and even hair loss. Experts agree that proper scalp hygiene is crucial to managing excess oil and preventing these problems.

Dr. DM Mahajan, Senior Consultant Dermatologist at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals in New Delhi, explains, “Excessive oil can clog hair follicles and create an environment that may hinder hair growth. Regular cleaning of the scalp is essential to remove oil, dead skin cells, and product build-up.”

Is the toothbrush hack effective?

The new toothbrush method claims to help exfoliate and cleanse the scalp by removing oil, dirt, and build-up. Social media users tout it as an effective way to unclog pores and sebaceous glands, leaving the scalp feeling fresher. Dr. Sarita Sanke, Senior Consultant Dermatologist at Yashoda Super Speciality Hospital, NCR, notes that using a toothbrush with soft bristles can promote a deeper clean by dislodging excess oil and debris from the scalp.

Dr. Piyusha Bhagde, Founder of Skin Ethics Clinic in Akola, Maharashtra, adds that brushing the scalp with a soft toothbrush can help loosen dandruff, remove build-up, and even improve blood circulation to the scalp. Some also use oils or apple cider vinegar during this process to enhance the effect. However, Dr. Bhagde cautions that while this method may improve scalp cleanliness, there is no scientific evidence to support claims that it boosts hair growth.

Potential risks of the toothbrush method

Despite the apparent benefits, experts like Dr. Mahajan warn that the toothbrush method comes with some potential risks. "The bristles of a toothbrush can be too harsh for the sensitive skin on the scalp," he says. "Aggressive scrubbing can cause irritation, micro-tears, or even inflammation, exacerbating existing scalp conditions or leading to hair follicle damage."

Dr. Mahajan emphasizes that there are safer, more effective alternatives for scalp care, such as specially designed scalp scrubs and exfoliating shampoos. These products are formulated to remove excess oil and dead skin without causing irritation.

Better alternatives for scalp health

Instead of using a toothbrush, experts recommend the following alternatives for keeping your scalp clean and healthy:

  • Scalp Scrubs: Use specialized scrubs containing gentle exfoliants to remove build-up without damaging the skin.
  • Gentle Shampoos: Opt for sulphate-free shampoos that cleanse without stripping your scalp’s natural oils.
  • Regular Massaging: Massaging the scalp during shampooing improves circulation and promotes scalp health.
  • Avoid Over-Washing: Limit hair washes to two or three times a week to prevent dryness.
  • Hydrating Masks: Nourish your scalp with conditioning masks formulated specifically for scalp care.

Additionally, experts recommend washing your scalp every other day to prevent oil and impurities from accumulating. If you oil your hair, limit the application to an hour before washing it out, as leaving oil on for too long can clog pores. When conditioning, avoid applying products directly to the scalp to prevent it from becoming greasy.

While the toothbrush method for cleaning the scalp may seem like a quick fix for oily hair, experts advise caution. The potential for irritation and hair follicle damage makes it a risky option for some individuals. Instead, focusing on regular scalp care with appropriate products like scalp scrubs, gentle shampoos, and massages will help keep your scalp clean, healthy, and conducive to hair growth. Maintaining a balanced routine and protecting your scalp from excessive oil build-up will go a long way in achieving stronger, shinier hair.
