Egypt has received an Israeli proposal for a temporary ceasefire in Gaza, which aims to open the door to talks for a permanent end to the conflict, state-affiliated media reported Monday.
Sources told Egypt’s Al-Qahera News that Egypt has passed on the Israeli proposal to Hamas and is awaiting a response. Further details about the proposal have not been disclosed.
No official comments have been made yet from Egyptian, Israeli, or Hamas authorities.
The development comes after Hamas announced Saturday that a delegation, led by senior official Khalil Al-Hayya, traveled to Cairo to meet with Egyptian and Qatari mediators. They are working to advance efforts for an agreement to halt Israel’s offensive in Gaza. Hamas expressed openness to proposals that would ensure a permanent ceasefire, an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, an end to Palestinian suffering, and a prisoner exchange.
Earlier on Monday, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani reaffirmed their strong rejection of the displacement of Palestinians. The two leaders discussed the ongoing efforts to restore a ceasefire in Gaza and work toward a prisoner exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas, according to the Egyptian presidency.
In January, Egypt, along with Qatar and the U.S., brokered a phased ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. However, Israel violated the deal by resuming military operations on March 18, under pressure from the far-right faction within Netanyahu’s government.
Since October 2023, nearly 51,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, have been killed in Gaza amid Israel's military operations. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants in November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice.
