Tech researchers have announced a major breakthrough in sensor technology with the development of the world’s smallest PhotoPlethysmoGraphy (PPG) sensor head. They discovered this with the support of TSLC Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of SemiLEDs Corporation, and SCIVAX Corporation. This new sensor technology, designed to measure pulse waves from blood vessels, will be available for evaluation starting in April 2025, according to a TSLC statement.
The development of the world’s smallest light source device, Amtelus, is the result of a collaboration between TSLC and SCIVAX, combining TSLC’s advanced packaging technology with SCIVAX’s nano-imprinting lens technology. This innovation has led to a significant reduction in the size of the sensor head used for vital monitoring in devices such as smartwatches, fitness trackers, and other health-related wearables. The compact sensor head has a mounting area of only 1 square millimeter, 1/10th the size of conventional devices, and its thickness is about half that of traditional sensors. This makes it suitable for installation in previously difficult-to-reach narrow spaces.
The new PPG sensor head is designed for use in a variety of applications, including health monitoring, beauty devices, and home healthcare. Its small size allows it to be used in tight spaces, and the ability to deploy multiple sensors in an array enhances its sensing capabilities. This opens up possibilities for more precise monitoring of blood flow and other vital metrics. Additionally, the sensor’s resin packaging integrates both the light source and optical sensor, significantly reducing manufacturing costs compared to traditional designs.
TSLC and SCIVAX plan to expand the applications of this technology into next-generation life science fields, particularly for use in vital sensors and medical diagnostics. The collaboration aims to provide smaller, more efficient, and cost-effective solutions to meet the growing demand for high-precision sensors in a range of industries, including health, beauty, and personal wellness.
TSLC is a leading developer of optoelectronic systems and wafer-level packaging solutions, while SCIVAX specializes in nanoimprinting technology, enabling high-precision molding for a variety of applications. Their combined expertise is expected to drive further innovations in sensor technology for the next generation of smart devices.
