A ban on fishing has been imposed in the country from April 15, in line with neighboring India. With this, no one from other countries will be able to catch and take fish from Bangladeshi waters, said Fisheries and Livestock Advisor Farida Akhter.
She said this after inaugurating the construction work of the modernization project of the BFDC Fish Landing and Wholesale Fish Market, Cox's Bazar Center on Thursday afternoon.
The advisor said fishermen have been repeatedly saying that when there was a ban in Bangladesh, fishermen from other countries caught fish as there was no ban in other countries. Then, a new deadline has been set in the context of the research of the Fisheries Department's expert team.
She also said, “The modernization project of the Fish Landing and Wholesale Fish Market, Cox's Bazar Center will cost Tk 232 crore 83 lakh. Out of this, JICA is providing Tk 172 crore 31 lakh. Through the implementation of the project, a better working environment will be created for fishermen. Landing time will be reduced as well.”
In addition, the supply of quality marine fish will increase, and post-harvest losses will be reduced, according to the people concerned.
Japanese ambassador to Bangladesh Saida Shinichi, secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Md. Tofazzel Hossain, chairman and additional secretary of the Fisheries Development Corporation Suraiya Akter Jahan, and JICA Representative Ichiguchi Tomohide, were present on the occasion among others.
