Prices of essential commodities in Dhaka’s kitchen markets remain high despite a low turnout of shoppers after the Eid holidays.
Many shops in Mirpur-11 and Mirpur-6 remain closed, while a large number of consumers have yet to return to the capital, but supply shortages continue to push prices up.
Retailers say weak wholesale supply and disrupted distribution chains have kept prices elevated. They expect the market to stabilise only after normal supply resumes and both traders and consumers fully return.
The poultry market faces the sharpest pressure. Sonali chicken sells at Tk350 per kg, layer chicken at Tk370, and local (desi) chicken at Tk700. Broiler chicken remains between Tk200 and Tk220, as traders cite higher transport and fuel costs.
Beef sells between Tk750 and Tk800 per kg, while mutton remains around Tk1200. In the fish market, rui and katla sell at Tk300–350 per kg, while shrimp costs Tk650–750.
Rice prices have also edged up, with premium Miniket such as Mozammel selling at Tk90 per kg, while Manjur and Sagar brands range between Tk85 and Tk88.
Vegetable prices remain high, with bitter gourd at Tk160 per kg and green chillies at Tk140–160. However, onions and potatoes offer some relief, selling at Tk40–50 and around Tk20 per kg respectively.
