The National Board of Revenue (NBR) said Monday that the last day for individual taxpayers to submit income tax returns for the 2025–26 tax year is March 31. Taxpayers who apply before the deadline may receive an additional 90 days to file.
Sheikh Md. Al-Amin, NBR Public Relations Officer, confirmed that taxpayers can submit a written or online application for an extension. The concerned tax commissioner may approve an extra 90 days for filing.
Taxpayers can apply for the extension through the NBR’s e-Return system using the “Time Extension” menu. Applications will be approved or rejected online by the commissioner of the respective tax region.
If approved, taxpayers can submit their returns within the extended period without any penalty or additional tax.
According to the NBR, nearly 50 lakh individual taxpayers have registered in the e-Return system for 2025–26, of whom about 41 lakh have already submitted their returns. Around 9 lakh taxpayers still have the opportunity to file.
Considering this situation, the NBR said the filing deadline has been conditionally extended for taxpayers who apply in time for the online extension facility.
