Bangladesh Bank has announced that no new banknotes will be issued to the public ahead of Eid this year.
Traditionally, the central bank and commercial banks distribute freshly printed paper notes before Eid to meet public demand. Many people exchange old notes for new ones to give to family members and children as Eid greetings, a long-standing cultural practice during the festival.
However, the central bank said this tradition will not continue this year.
In a notification issued on Sunday, Bangladesh Bank stated that no new banknotes will be supplied to the market on the occasion of Eid.
The announcement marks a departure from the usual pre-Eid practice, when banks arrange special counters to distribute fresh notes to customers.
