More than 40 lakh taxpayers have submitted their income tax returns online for the 2025-26 tax year so far, according to a press release issued on Wednesday by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
Under a special order issued by the NBR, online submission of income tax returns has been made mandatory this year for all individual taxpayers, except senior citizens aged 65 years and above, physically challenged or specially-abled taxpayers, Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, legal representatives filing on behalf of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh, reports BSS.
Since August 4, 2025, nearly 5 million taxpayers have registered in the e-Return system, while over 4 million have already filed their returns online.
According to monthly statistics, 251,784 taxpayers filed e-Returns in August 2025, 301,302 in September, 454,076 in October, 1,040,472 in November, 978,198 in December, 655,363 in January 2026, 294,987 in February, and 36,700 in the first four days of March. By comparison, 1,399,655 taxpayers had submitted e-Returns within the stipulated time last year.
Of the total e-Returns submitted this year, 2,866,618 were filed by male taxpayers and 1,136,003 by female taxpayers.
Among them, 1,610,750 male and 478,566 female taxpayers reported income under the salary head. Income from house rent was declared by 187,754 male and 84,477 female taxpayers.
A total of 1,435,630 male and 765,197 female taxpayers reported income below the taxable threshold. Income between Tk 5 lakh and Tk 10 lakh was reported by 534,954 male and 193,837 female taxpayers. Income between Tk 10 lakh and Tk 20 lakh was reported by 164,983 male and 47,532 female taxpayers. Income between Tk 20 lakh and Tk 40 lakh was declared by 54,212 male and 11,455 female taxpayers, while 29,080 male and 5,117 female taxpayers reported income exceeding Tk 40 lakh.
Due to surcharge-applicable asset levels, 39,363 male and 11,065 female taxpayers paid surcharge.
Although online filing is not mandatory for Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, they can apply by sending their passport number, National ID number and email address to [email protected]. Upon application, an OTP and registration link are sent to their email, enabling them to file returns online. Authorized representatives are also allowed to submit e-Returns on behalf of taxpayers.
Taxpayers can submit returns without uploading documents by entering accurate information on income, expenditure, assets and liabilities into the system.
They can pay taxes online through debit or credit cards, internet banking or mobile financial services such as bKash and Nagad. Upon submission, taxpayers can instantly download the acknowledgement slip and tax certificate. If errors are found, revised returns can be submitted within 180 days. So far, more than 56,000 taxpayers have filed revised returns for the 2025-26 tax year.
For assistance, taxpayers can contact the NBR call centre at 09643 71 71 71 for immediate support regarding e-Return issues. Written queries can also be submitted through the eTax Service option at www.etaxnbr.gov.bd. Additionally, e-Return help desks have been set up in all tax zones across the country to provide services during office hours.
To help taxpayers avoid penalties, the NBR has already sent SMS reminders urging individual taxpayers to submit their e-Returns. The Board has requested all taxpayers to file their income tax returns for the 2025-26 tax year through the e-Return system by March 31, 2026.
