The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has introduced a new facility allowing Bangladeshi taxpayers living abroad to receive One-Time Passwords (OTP) via their registered email addresses, instead of mobile phones, to facilitate online income tax return submissions.
According to a press release, the “special registration” system is designed for expatriates who had previously registered in the e-return system using biometric mobile numbers but are now unable to reset their passwords due to lack of access to those numbers.
Expatriate taxpayers seeking email verification must apply by sending an email to [email protected] from their own email address. Applications must include copies of the applicant’s passport, National Identity Card (NID), visa page, overseas address, mobile/telephone number used abroad, and the date of most recent departure from Bangladesh.
Once the NBR verifies the submitted documents, the email verification request will be approved. Taxpayers can then use the OTP sent to their verified email address to reset passwords, complete registration, and perform other e-return activities.
The NBR said the online return submission system has been highly successful, with nearly 3.9 million income tax returns filed online in the 2025-2026 tax year so far. The authority has urged all individual taxpayers to submit their returns for the 2025-2026 tax year through the e-return system by February 28, 2026.
