The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has launched a nationwide sale of essential commodities marking the holy month of Ramadan, deploying 450 mobile trucks across the country.
According to a press release issued today, the special initiative has been undertaken in line with government directives to support low-income families during Ramadan. The programme will continue for 20 days—from February 17 to March 12—excluding Fridays and public holidays.
Essential items including edible oil, sugar, red lentils, chickpeas and dates will be sold through the mobile trucks. Of the 450 trucks, 50 will operate in Dhaka, 20 in Chattogram, 15 in each of the seven divisional cities and five in each of 55 district towns. Each truck is expected to serve around 400 consumers daily.
A total of 23,000 tonnes of essential commodities will be distributed among nearly 3.5 million beneficiaries during the programme. Each consumer may purchase up to two litres of edible oil, one kilogram of sugar, two kilograms of red lentils, one kilogram of chickpeas and 500 grams of dates.
Prices have been fixed at Tk 115 per litre of edible oil, Tk 80 per kg of sugar, Tk 70 per kg of lentils, Tk 60 per kg of chickpeas and Tk 160 for 500 grams of dates.
Meanwhile, TCB’s regular subsidised sales will continue for around 6.6 million smart family cardholder households. To mark Ramadan, about 40,300 tonnes of products will be distributed in February and 33,000 tonnes in March among cardholders, with chickpeas and dates added as special Ramadan items at designated sales points nationwide.
