Commerce Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin on Monday said that he never compromised on ethical standards after taking charge.

Bashir made the remarks at a farewell reception on Monday accorded to him by the Ministry of Commerce in his honour at the Ministry, said a Commerce Ministry press release.

Addressing the officials of the ministry, the adviser said he had joined the ministry with an “extremely negative perception” about its internal culture but was leaving with a deep sense of gratitude.

“I came here with an impossibly bad impression about you. Today, I am returning with gratitude. I believe you are valuable assets of the country,” he said.

He added that the officials had demonstrated their ability to perform effectively under proper leadership. “With the right leadership, you can deliver—and you have proven that,” he told the gathering.

Referring to the student-led mass uprising of 2024, Sk. Bashir Uddin said the spirit of change, brought must be reflected in the conduct and mindset of public officials.

“The transformation that came through the 2024 student-people uprising must be reflected in your behaviour,” he said. “If anyone tries to compel you to do something unjust, you must say that it is not possible. Or at least politely explain how the task should be done properly.”

“I am confident that the day of assuming office  by the new  Commerce Minister would mark a celebration  .

Please extend your cooperation to the new minister in demonstrating effective leadership,” he urged officials.
Encouraging a culture of open dialogue, he added, “If you disagree with him, please do so, but communicate your views to him.”

Reiterating his stance on integrity, Sk. Bashir Uddin said, “After taking charge of the Ministry of Commerce, I never compromised on ethical issues, and I never will. I have worked for Bangladesh, for our children.”
He noted that the collective efforts of all wings and departments under the ministry enabled him to carry out his responsibilities effectively. “With these fond memories of working collectively, I can now return to my professional life,” he added.

The farewell function was chaired by Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman. Among others, Additional Secretary (Export) Md Abdur Rahim Khan, Additional Secretary (FTA) Ayesha Akter, Chairman of the Bangladesh Tea Board Major General Md Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Competition Commission A H M Ahsan spoke at the event, sharing their experiences and memories of working with the adviser.

Officials of the Ministry of Commerce and heads of its various departments and agencies also attended the programme.
