The Bangladesh government has approved the procurement of 210,000 metric tons of fertilizer from Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and domestic supplier Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited (KAFCO) at a total cost of 1,370 crore 91 lakh 78 thousand 975 taka. The order includes 80,000 tons of DAP, 70,000 tons of urea, and 60,000 tons of TSP fertilizers.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Government Procurement held at the Secretariat on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Finance Advisor Salehuddin Ahmed. According to sources at the meeting, the Ministry of Agriculture proposed importing 40,000 metric tons of DAP fertilizer from Morocco's OCP Nutricrops under a state-level agreement with the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) at a cost of 319 crore 51 lakh 8 thousand taka, or 651 US dollars per metric ton. The ministry also proposed importing 30,000 metric tons of TSP fertilizer from the same Moroccan company, which was approved at a cost of 184 crore 53 lakh 95 thousand 730 taka, or 501.33 US dollars per ton.
Another 40,000 metric tons of DAP fertilizer will be imported from Saudi Arabia’s Ma’aden under a state-level agreement with BADC, at a cost of 323 crore 92 lakh 80 thousand taka, or 660 US dollars per ton. In addition, 40,000 metric tons of bulk granular urea fertilizer from Saudi Arabia’s SABIC Agri-Nutrients Company for the fiscal year 2025–2026 was approved at a cost of 205 crore 31 lakh 63 thousand 640 taka, or 418.33 US dollars per ton. The government will also purchase 30,000 metric tons of bagged granular urea fertilizer from KAFCO at a cost of 153 crore 8 lakh 35 thousand 875 taka, or 415.88 US dollars per ton.
The government said the purchases are aimed at meeting domestic fertilizer demand and ensuring a stable supply of essential agricultural inputs for the coming fiscal year.
