In a move to strengthen Bangladesh’s digital economy, the government has officially launched freelancers.gov.bd, the country’s first government-led Freelancer ID Management portal.
Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, adviser to the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, said the platform aims to provide a transparent, secure and harassment-free verification system for the nation’s rapidly growing freelancing community. In a statement, he said that, in light of past cases of harassment and financial fraud, the government has made the entire process completely free, eliminating all application, renewal and processing fees.
Sign-ups and applications for freelancer IDs officially began on Tuesday. To enhance the platform’s user experience, community leaders will collaborate closely with the Bangladesh Call Center Association.
Developed as a vendor-free, zero-budget initiative, the portal leverages the internal capacity of the ICT Division without the need for external consultants. It has also undergone Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing (VAPT) to ensure robust technical security. A dedicated team of 29 engineers from the Department of ICT, supported by four experts, will assist users with any technical issues, Taiyeb said.
According to Taiyeb, the ICT Division is coordinating with Bangladesh Bank, the National Board of Revenue and the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit to ensure broad recognition. The digital ID is expected to be accepted by all financial institutions as an official form of identification. An API-based verification system will soon enable seamless verification for employers, clients and freelancing platforms.
The government is also considering a three-tier freelancer classification based on annual earnings: Fresh (up to US$50), Challenger ($50-$5,000) and Leader (above $5,000).
