Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur has warned that the culture of looting in the banking sector will never be allowed to return.
He said, “No financial looting system will be allowed to return to Bangladesh. For this, the cooperation of everyone, including academics, is needed. Cooperation of all parties concerned is essential to achieve this goal.”
He said this while speaking as the chief guest on the closing day of the International Islamic Finance and Banking Conference organized at the Nabab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban auditorium of University of Dhaka on Saturday. Guests from different countries participated in the conference.
The Governor said, “Islamic banks have been able to compete with conventional banks and give good profits to the depositors. However, due to failure to ensure good governance, some individuals and institutions have taken the opportunity to loot huge amounts of money from this sector. The Islamic banking sector has not lost the trust of the people. The highest deposits have come to Islamic banks in the last one year. In addition, Islami Bank Bangladesh has returned the assistance received from Bangladesh Bank.”
Stating that Bangladesh Bank has taken strict control measures to ensure transparency in loan disbursement, the Governor said that work is underway to formulate a new Islamic banking law for this purpose.
Regarding the role of the Sharia Board, he said, “The Sharia Board must play a strong and courageous role. It is not right that board members would be afraid of their jobs.”
