The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has committed $2.57 billion in new sovereign financing to Bangladesh for 2025, more than doubling its 2024 commitment of $1.18 billion. The funding will support key sectors, including energy, transportation, banking reforms, urban services, climate resilience, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and efforts to improve livelihoods in Cox’s Bazar, reports BSS.
ADB's 2025 portfolio reflects a balanced approach across multiple sectors, with 35% of the total allocated for transport infrastructure, 23% for financial reforms, and 16% for governance and public sector management. Energy initiatives account for 11%, while water and urban development projects make up 9%, and human and social development efforts represent 6%.
A notable commitment is the $688 million South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation-Chattogram-Dohazari Railway Project. This project will upgrade critical rail infrastructure, providing direct train services between Dhaka and Cox's Bazar.
Another key initiative is the $500 million "Stabilizing and Reforming the Banking Sector Programme," aimed at strengthening financial regulations and stability. Additionally, the $400 million "Climate-Resilient Inclusive Development Programme" will focus on enhancing climate resilience and promoting inclusive growth.
ADB also emphasized improved project readiness and management, which has bolstered the effectiveness of its funding. Besides sovereign financing, the ADB has provided support to the private sector in sectors like textiles, renewable energy, and trade finance.
As of December 31, 2025, ADB’s cumulative loan commitments to Bangladesh surpassed $42 billion, with an active sovereign portfolio worth $10.8 billion. For 2026, ADB will continue focusing on economic diversification, infrastructure development, and digital transformation, addressing Bangladesh's evolving needs.
ADB remains a leading multilateral development bank, working across Asia and the Pacific to foster sustainable and inclusive growth.
