Thieves executed a daring heist early Monday morning, drilling into a German bank vault in Gelsenkirchen and stealing millions of euros worth of property from safety deposit boxes. Police said the theft occurred during the holiday lull, affecting around 2,700 customers of Sparkasse bank.
Investigators believe the total value of the stolen goods ranges between €10 million and €90 million, making it one of the largest heists in Germany’s recent history. Authorities were alerted by a fire alarm at the bank branch shortly before 4 a.m. on Monday. Upon arrival, police and firefighters discovered a hole in the wall and found the vault ransacked, indicating that a large drill was likely used to break through the basement wall.
Witnesses reported seeing several men carrying large bags in a nearby parking garage over the weekend. Video footage from the garage shows masked individuals leaving in a stolen vehicle early Monday morning. The bank was closed on Tuesday, with around 200 customers arriving, seeking access to their accounts. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to track down the suspects involved in this audacious robbery.
