The government has increased the price of gas supplied to fertilizer factories by up to 83%, raising the rate from Tk 16 per cubic meter to Tk 29.25, reports the Daily Sun.
Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) announced the revised tariff on Sunday afternoon at a press briefing in Dhaka.
Earlier, Petrobangla and several gas distribution companies had proposed raising the price by as much as 150%, prompting BERC to hold a public hearing.
During that hearing, BERC Chairman Jalal Ahmed said the regulator would take a balanced approach after considering all relevant factors.
He said, “Although agriculture’s contribution to GDP is trifling, food security and massive employment opportunities must be considered. The cost of LNG imports must also be taken into account.”
