Aiming to create widespread public awareness about noise pollution, the government has decided to keep Dhaka city noise-free for one minute from 10 am to 10:01 am on Sunday (Oct 15).
"Symbolic 'One Minute Silence' campaign will be held in Dhaka city from 10:00 am to 10:01 am on October 15 to increase public awareness about noise pollution," Environment, Forest and Climate Change Secretary Dr Farhina Ahmed told a press conference at the Secretariat in the capital on Thursday, reports BSS.
Urging the Dhaka city dwellers not to create any kind of noise, she said everyone's cooperation is needed to check noise pollution.
The environment secretary said on October 15, 2023, special programmes will be held at 11 important points in Dhaka city from 09:30 am to 10:00 am.
She said the programmes will be held in front of Osmani Auditorium next to the Secretariat, Shahbagh intersection, Uttara, Vijaysarani, Mirpur-10, Gabtali, Mogbazar, Mahakhali, Gulshan-1, Basabo Buddhist Temple and Jatrabari intersection.
At these points, Farhina Ahmed said, ministers, deputy ministers, officials and employees of the secretariat, public offices under the ministry, scout members of schools and colleges, local public representatives, representatives of government offices, traffic police and transport owners association members will be present with banners.
In addition, they will distribute leaflets and stickers among motorists asking them to refrain from playing horns for one minute, she said.
Additional Secretary of the ministry (Environment and Climate Change) Sanjay Kumar Bhowmik, Additional Secretary (Environmental Pollution Control) Md Mizanur Rahman, Additional Secretary (Development) Dr Fahmida Khanam, Director General of Department of Environment Dr Abdul Hamid and Joint Secretary (Environment) Mohammad Abdul Wadud Chowdhury were present at the press conference.
