A crew of four research volunteers stepped inside NASA’s CHAPEA (Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog) habitat on Oct. 19, marking the start of the agency’s second 378-day simulated Mars mission.

They stepped inside the 1,700-square-foot CHAPEA or the Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog habitat, reports India Today.

The crew members, Ross Elder, Ellen Ellis, Matthew Montgomery, and James Spicer, will remain in this habitat until October 31, 2026, living and working like astronauts on the Red Planet to help Nasa prepare for future crewed Mars missions.

The CHAPEA mission simulates the extreme challenges of living on Mars, including resource limitations, isolation, equipment failures, and a 22-minute communication delay that mirrors the time lag between Earth and Mars.

The crew will conduct high-tempo simulated Marswalks outside the habitat in spacesuits, traverse a simulated Martian environment with red sand, maintain the habitat, perform robotic operations, carry out physical exercise, and even cultivate crops.

NASA’s Human Research Program views CHAPEA as critical for reducing health and performance risks of spaceflight beyond low-Earth orbit. Sara Whiting, the program’s project scientist, explained that the lessons learned will guide real mission planning, habitat and vehicle design, and provide necessary resources to support astronauts venturing to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

CHAPEA principal investigator Grace Douglas emphasised that the data collected will help NASA make informed decisions about astronaut health and mission safety.

The crew will also face simulated Mars mission stressors such as prolonged isolation, communication delays, and potential equipment failures, allowing researchers to study their adaptation and responses. The data will support the development of protocols and countermeasures for the complex realities of Mars exploration.

This mission is the second in a series of CHAPEA simulations, with the first 378-day mission ending successfully on July 6, 2024. Together, these missions are vital steps in preparing humans for the long-duration exploration required for Mars settlement.
