Google is preparing to take artificial intelligence beyond Earth, quite literally. The company has unveiled Project Suncatcher, an ambitious attempt to explore whether in the future, AI computing could benefit from energy from space like solar energy.
As AI models become more powerful, data centres on Earth are consuming increasing amounts of energy and water, and those resources aren’t limitless.
Therefore, Google says it is now looking at radical alternatives to make AI development more sustainable in the long run.
Through Project Suncatcher, Google is planning to place specialised AI chips on solar-powered satellites in low-Earth orbit.
The idea is to process AI workloads in space, reducing the environmental burden on terrestrial infrastructure while taking advantage of uninterrupted solar exposure.
Google calls this a long-term research moonshot , not a commercial product just yet, but a potential blueprint for the next era of computing.
What is Project Suncatcher?
With Project Suncatcher, Google is aiming to build small constellations of satellites, each carrying the company’s Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) chips– its custom processors built for machine-learning workloads.
Around 80 satellites would work together roughly 400 miles above Earth, effectively functioning as an off-planet data centre.
These satellites will be equipped with high-efficiency solar panels for power and linked via free-space optical communication beams, letting them talk to each other and send data back to Earth.
By operating outside the atmosphere, Google says these TPUs can access abundant solar energy without the cooling, land and water demands that Earth-based data centres require.
The company adds that as rocket launches become cheaper and satellite components more compact, such space-based computing clusters could one day complement, or even reduce pressure on terrestrial data-centre infrastructure.
How will it work?
Google plans to start small. In the first phase, the company will launch two prototype satellites by early 2027, marking its initial test of running TPU workloads in orbit. These satellites will help assess power generation, chip performance in harsh space conditions, data-transfer efficiency and long-term reliability.
However, Google isn’t shying away from the challenges. Its research paper highlights major engineering hurdles ahead, particularly around thermal management, high-bandwidth communication and ensuring on-orbit system reliability. While space offers essentially unlimited sunlight, chips in orbit will need to survive radiation and extreme temperature swings, without the cooling systems used on Earth.
Google’s Project Suncatcher is still an exploratory work, and full-scale deployment — if it ever happens — is unlikely before the mid-2030s.
Why is Google doing this?
Why look beyond Earth? Well, Google isn’t alone. China, for instance, is already planning to launch AI-powered satellites as part of efforts to build orbital computing infrastructure. The motivation is simple, AI’s energy appetite is exploding. Training and running large models requires enormous power, and big tech data centres are increasingly scrutinised for their electricity and water use.
However, in space, sunlight is continuous and free. Or as Philip Johnston, co-founder of space-AI startup Starcloud — which is working with Nvidia — recently explained how space-based data centres could cut carbon emissions tenfold over their lifetime compared with Earth-based systems.
In fact, Google’s own modelling suggests that by the mid-2030s, satellite-powered compute could become cost-competitive,using improvements in solar efficiency and optical communication technology.
For now, Project Suncatcher remains an ambitious experiment but it highlights how tech giants are looking far beyond land-based server farms to scale AI sustainably. As Google puts it, “In the future, space may be the best place to scale AI computers,” Whether that vision becomes reality depends on how well those first satellites perform, and how many engineering hurdles these companies will be able to solve along the way.
