Google announced Wednesday a bit of good news for Workspace users: Vids, a video-editing tool, will be made free for all users. Previously, it was a paid add-on. Not everything from Vids is free, however. If you want all the new AI-powered bells and whistles, you'll still need to pay up.
This move puts Google in direct competition with platforms like Canva and CapCut by making video editing more accessible to creators, educators, and small businesses, reports Techweez.
The free tier offers:
- A library of templates for quick project setups.
- Access to stock media, including video clips and images.
- Editing tools, enabling anyone to create professional-looking content without a steep learning curve.
There’s a catch though: the free version doesn’t include the powerful AI features that have made Google Vids one of the company’s most talked-about productivity tools.
What’s missing in the free version?
While you can edit and customize videos with the free plan, you won’t get access to the new AI-powered features that Google is rolling out today. These premium tools include:
- AI-Generated Avatars: Create avatars that can present your script on camera.
- Image-to-Video Generation (Veo 3): Upload a picture, like a new product, and turn it into an 8-second animated video.
- AI-Powered Transcript Clean-Up: If you add a recording of yourself, Google’s AI can automatically remove filler words and long pauses to make your delivery more polished.
These advanced features are only available to Google Workspace Business/Enterprise subscribers, as well as Google AI Pro and Ultra users.
Google’s decision to separate the free and paid tiers makes strategic sense. On one hand, the free editor lowers the entry barrier for new users, helping students, content creators, and small businesses try out Google Vids without extra cost.
On the other hand, the AI features are positioned as premium tools aimed at enterprises and professionals who want to save time and improve video quality at scale.
