WhatsApp is preparing to roll out a new feature that will allow users to engage in real-time voice conversations with Meta AI, marking a significant expansion of the app's AI capabilities and improving accessibility for users seeking hands-free assistance.
The feature, which is currently available to select beta testers through the latest iOS beta version (25.21.10.76) via TestFlight, is expected to be rolled out to a wider user base in the coming weeks, according to WABetaInfo, a portal that tracks WhatsApp updates.
Users will be able to initiate a voice session with Meta AI by tapping a waveform icon located in the Chats tab. An optional setting in voice preferences allows for voice chats to start automatically when the Meta AI interface is opened, though the feature is disabled by default to ensure user control.
Additionally, some testers have reported that voice chats with Meta AI can be launched directly from the Calls tab, streamlining the process further by eliminating the need to navigate through multiple screens.
To support users who may not know how to start a conversation, the interface includes pre-written prompt suggestions. Moreover, users can attach images from their gallery or camera directly through the input bar to provide visual context to their queries.
The feature is designed to mimic the flow of a natural phone conversation. It allows the voice session to remain active even when the user switches to other applications, using a "collapse" icon to minimise the chat window. Meta AI continues to listen and respond, making it possible for users to, for instance, read notes aloud or search the web while receiving real-time AI feedback.
WhatsApp has underscored its commitment to user privacy in the rollout of this feature. At any point, users can mute their microphone or end the session entirely. iOS devices also display an orange dot in the status bar when the microphone is in use — a built-in privacy indicator that cannot be overridden by third-party apps, including WhatsApp.
The voice chat functionality is likely to be especially helpful for users who are multitasking, driving, or experiencing difficulties with typing, further integrating artificial intelligence into daily communication habits.
While Meta AI features have been gradually introduced across Meta platforms, this marks the first time real-time voice interaction will be available natively within WhatsApp, suggesting a broader push by the company to make AI more conversational and accessible across its suite of products.
