Microsoft and OpenAI are reportedly clashing over a contract clause tied to artificial general intelligence (AGI), according to The Information.
The dispute centers on an agreement that would end Microsoft’s access to AGI once OpenAI reaches that milestone. Microsoft is pushing for the removal of the clause, but OpenAI has so far resisted.
"We have a long-term, productive partnership that has delivered amazing AI tools for everyone. Talks are ongoing and we are optimistic we will continue to build together for years to come," the companies said in a joint statement to Reuters.
This disagreement surfaces amid growing tension in one of AI’s most important alliances. OpenAI still requires Microsoft’s consent to complete its conversion into a public-benefit corporation. However, sources say months of talks have yet to yield an agreement.
Microsoft first joined forces with OpenAI in 2019, committing $1 billion to help develop AI innovations on its Azure cloud infrastructure.
