Nintendo’s newly launched Switch 2 has shattered records, becoming the fastest-selling console in the company’s history. According to an official announcement made Wednesday, more than 3.5 million units were sold worldwide within just four days of its release, according to a Nintendo statement.
The next-generation console, released last Thursday, builds on the success of the original Switch with significant upgrades, including a larger display, enhanced processing power, and eight times more memory. It retains the popular hybrid design, allowing players to use it both as a handheld and a home console.
The launch generated a global wave of excitement, with pre-orders selling out rapidly and long queues forming at midnight store openings. Nintendo confirmed that the Switch 2 has achieved “the highest global sales level for any Nintendo hardware within the first four days,” surpassing both the original Switch and Sony’s PlayStation 5 in launch sales.
Industry analysts believe the challenge now lies in sustaining this momentum. “Sales momentum will be difficult to maintain in the long run,” said Darang Candra of Niko Partners. He noted that demand may have been accelerated by concerns over future price hikes, particularly due to potential tariffs by the United States.
The Switch 2 carries a $449.99 price tag in the U.S., compared to $299.99 for the original Switch at launch. A cheaper Japan-only version retails at 49,980 yen (approximately $350). Much of the hardware destined for North America is manufactured in Vietnam, where new U.S. tariffs could drive costs even higher.
Nintendo projects sales of 15 million Switch 2 units within the current fiscal year, matching early numbers for its predecessor. The original Switch, boosted by pandemic-era hits like Animal Crossing, has sold over 152 million units since 2017.
To maintain engagement, Nintendo is banking on a lineup of new games, including Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World, which introduce open-world exploration and are priced above current titles. The Switch 2 also includes new features such as magnetic detachable controllers, in-game voice chat, and temporary game sharing—designed to appeal to a younger, social media-savvy audience.
Despite expanding into theme parks and film adaptations, Nintendo still relies heavily on its gaming division, which accounts for 90% of its revenue. The early success of the Switch 2 is therefore not just a sales milestone, but a crucial indicator of the company’s strategic future.
