WhatsApp has announced it will cease to function on certain older iPhone models starting June 1, 2025, as part of its annual review of device compatibility.
The move, aimed at bolstering security and enhancing performance, will leave users of outdated iOS versions unable to access the messaging platform unless they upgrade their devices.
According to the company, iPhones running on iOS versions earlier than 15.1 will no longer be supported from next month. This includes the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus — all of which have already been declared “obsolete” by Apple and are no longer eligible for hardware servicing or software updates.
The Meta-owned messaging service said the decision was in line with its ongoing efforts to improve user security amid evolving cybersecurity threats and changing technology standards. Devices lacking regular security patches become increasingly vulnerable to potential breaches, WhatsApp noted.
“We regularly review what operating systems we support and make updates accordingly,” the company stated in its updated FAQ section. “These devices often do not receive the latest security updates or may lack the technical capabilities required to support newer WhatsApp features.”
Impact on business users
The change will also affect users of WhatsApp Business — the platform’s dedicated app for small and medium-sized enterprises. Those still using unsupported devices will be required to switch to newer hardware to retain access to their business communications.
Currently, the iPhone 8 and iPhone X are the oldest models that will continue to support WhatsApp after the change.
However, both devices stopped receiving major iOS upgrades following the release of iOS 16, suggesting they may face support limitations in upcoming reviews.
Security and feature access
WhatsApp emphasised that maintaining compatibility with newer operating systems enables it to roll out features designed to enhance user privacy and data protection. Recent additions include advanced chat privacy settings, disappearing messages, and chat locks. New tools also prevent copying of messages and media, further tightening the app’s security framework.
Analysts view the update as part of a broader trend among tech companies to phase out legacy device support in favour of innovation and security.
What users can do
Users who wish to continue using WhatsApp are advised to upgrade to newer iPhone models. Failing to do so may result in the complete loss of access to their chats and media stored within the app.
