Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 series is already stirring up excitement, with new rumours suggesting some unexpected changes for this year’s models.
According to a fresh investor note from GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu, the base model iPhone 17 may use the same A18 chip that’s set to debut in the iPhone 16 lineup, rather than the anticipated A19 chip.
Pu had previously predicted that the entire iPhone 17 lineup would sport the A19 chip, with RAM differences setting the models apart. However, his latest insights suggest that only the iPhone 17 Air and the Pro models will move to the A19 chip.
The iPhone 17 is expected to come with 8GB of RAM, while the Air, Pro, and Pro Max models will pack a more robust 12GB of RAM.
The note also reveals that all four iPhone 17 models will feature a new metalens technology for the proximity sensor. This technology is expected to dramatically shrink the size of the Face ID module, which in turn would reduce the size of the Dynamic Island across the entire iPhone 17 lineup. If this holds true, it would mark a notable design evolution compared to the iPhone 16 models.
These predictions directly challenge an earlier report by renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who suggested that the Dynamic Island would remain “largely unchanged” in the iPhone 17 series.

Other notable features across the lineup include a 24MP front camera, improved rear cameras with 48MP sensors, and 35W fast charging.
The models are expected to debut this September.
