Lockheed Martin has successfully launched its eighth GPS III satellite, designated SV08, at 1:37 p.m. EDT from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The satellite achieved signal acquisition shortly after liftoff, marking another milestone in the modernization of the U.S. global positioning system, according to a Lockheed Martin statement.
Manufactured in Littleton, Colorado, GPS III SV08 was shipped and prepared for launch in just over three months—demonstrating Lockheed Martin’s growing capability for rapid deployment. This follows a similar accelerated timeline seen with the previous GPS III launch in December 2024.
“Our team is thrilled to support another launch of a critical GPS satellite,” said Malik Musawwir, vice president of Navigation Systems at Lockheed Martin Space. “This launch highlights our ability to quickly and reliably deploy national security space assets.”
GPS III satellites are designed to deliver enhanced positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services for both civilian and military users. The platform includes advanced features such as M-code capabilities for secure military signals, improved anti-jamming resilience, and stronger accuracy across aviation, maritime, and land-based applications.
The satellite is now under operational control at Lockheed Martin’s Denver-based Launch & Checkout Operations Center and will be integrated into the active GPS constellation upon full commissioning.
Beyond satellite production, Lockheed Martin is also modernizing the ground control architecture that operates the entire GPS constellation. This includes a global network of monitoring stations and antennas, recently upgraded to allow M-code early use—enhancing secure communication for U.S. and allied forces.
Once fully operational, SV08 will become a critical component in the U.S. Space Force’s effort to maintain global GPS superiority. Lockheed Martin was also awarded a recent contract modification to build two additional GPS IIIF satellites, ensuring continued advancements in secure navigation for years to come.
