Telecommunication services have been widely disrupted across Bangladesh due to heavy storms, tidal surges, and power supply failures caused by a low-pressure system. Over 5,900 telecom sites have gone offline, severely affecting communication in several regions of the country.
Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor on ICT Affairs, shared the update in a Facebook post on Friday. He confirmed that the storm-driven disruptions have damaged telecommunications infrastructure, and widespread power outages have rendered thousands of sites inoperable.
"The nationwide telecom network is experiencing major disruptions due to natural disasters that are also affecting our power systems," Taiyeb stated. He added that both telecommunication service providers and power utilities, including Palli Vidyut, are actively working to restore the network under challenging conditions.
The worst-hit regions include Barisal, Sylhet South, Tangail, Chandpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka North, Comilla, Noakhali, and Chittagong South, where connectivity remains severely impacted. Many sites have been taken offline either due to electrical outages or damage from torrential rains and high winds.
Authorities have mobilized emergency teams and are coordinating efforts with local power distributors to repair infrastructure and resume services. However, the full restoration of network services may take additional time depending on weather conditions and the ongoing challenges with power supply stability.
