In a bizarre intersection of tradition and technology, a Greek woman has filed for divorce after claiming that ChatGPT exposed her husband's alleged affair through a digital reading of coffee grounds.
According to Greek City Times, the woman, married for over 12 years and mother of two, turned to the AI chatbot in an attempt to modernize the ancient art of tasseography—the reading of coffee residue to divine the future. She uploaded images of coffee cup grounds belonging to herself and her husband and asked the AI to interpret the patterns.
The AI’s response reportedly shocked her. It suggested her husband was romantically involved with a younger woman who was intent on breaking up their family. The interpretation went further, claiming the man's “true partner” had a name beginning with the letter “E,” while the woman's own reading pointed to betrayal and emotional turmoil at home.
Her husband dismissed the entire episode as absurd. Speaking to a local television channel, he said, “I laughed it off as nonsense. But she took it seriously. She asked me to leave, told our kids we were getting divorced, and then I got a call from a lawyer. That’s when I realized this wasn’t just a phase.”
Within three days, the woman formally served divorce papers, refusing to consider reconciliation or mutual separation.
The man’s attorney stated that the wife had a history of indulging in mystical beliefs, recalling an earlier period when she followed the advice of an astrologer for nearly a year. He emphasized that AI interpretations hold no legal or evidentiary value. “He is innocent until proven otherwise,” the lawyer asserted.
Though no legal case has been filed beyond the divorce proceedings, the story has gone viral on Greek social media, sparking fierce debates over the influence of artificial intelligence in personal decisions. Legal experts have reiterated that AI-generated interpretations cannot be used as admissible evidence in court under current Greek law.
While the AI's coffee reading might have brewed trouble in this household, the incident highlights a growing tension between digital tools and real-life consequences in an age increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.
