Pakistan has granted Starlink temporary registration, allowing the satellite internet provider to operate in the country. Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja announced on Friday that the decision was made under the directive of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, with all relevant safety and regulatory agencies approving a provisional No Objection Certificate (NOC), reports Dawn.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will oversee Starlink’s compliance with licensing requirements, including fee payments. The minister emphasized that under Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s leadership, Pakistan is taking key steps toward digital transformation, with Starlink’s registration marking a major milestone.
She highlighted that satellite-based internet services will significantly improve connectivity, particularly in underserved and remote areas. The government worked closely with regulatory bodies, including the PTA, cybersecurity agencies, and the Space Authority, to simplify the registration process.
Shaza Fatima expressed optimism that Starlink’s entry will boost Pakistan’s digital infrastructure, expand internet access, and help bridge the digital divide.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk had previously stated that he was awaiting approval from the Pakistani government to launch Starlink services. His comments followed an exchange on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) with Pakistani user Sanam Jamali, who urged him to introduce Starlink in Pakistan. Musk responded that government approval was the final step before deployment.
Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, delivers internet through a vast satellite network and is expected to play a crucial role in improving connectivity across Pakistan.
