SpaceX is set to launch its towering Starship rocket today (March 3), marking its eighth orbital test flight. The launch window will open at 5:30 p.m. (23:30 GMT) from the Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, with a live webcast available.
At 403 feet (123 meters) tall, Starship is the world’s largest and most powerful rocket, designed for full reusability. It plays a key role in Elon Musk’s vision of colonizing Mars and is also critical to NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return astronauts to the Moon, reports AFP.
The previous test flight on January 16 ended in a fiery explosion over the Caribbean, prompting FAA investigations and cleanup efforts. However, the FAA has now cleared Starship for flight before finalizing its review of the incident.
This latest mission includes several key upgrades to the upper-stage spacecraft for improved reliability and performance. A major test will involve attempting to catch the booster stage using the launch tower’s “chopstick” arms, a maneuver SpaceX has executed twice before. The company will also deploy Starlink simulators, which will burn up upon re-entry.
While SpaceX ultimately plans to recover the upper stage, this flight will conclude with an ocean splashdown off Australia’s west coast. The company must demonstrate flightworthiness, crew safety, and in-orbit refueling before achieving its ambitious space exploration goals.
