Billionaire Elon Musk sparked controversy on Monday by claiming that Canada is "not a real country" after hundreds of thousands of Canadians signed a petition calling for the revocation of his dual citizenship, reads a Daily Sabah post.
The petition, launched by British Columbia resident Qualia Reed and sponsored by New Democratic Party (NDP) MP Charlie Angus, has gathered over 236,000 signatures. It argues that Musk, a prominent ally of former U.S. President Donald Trump, has used his wealth and influence to undermine Canadian sovereignty and interfere in national interests.
Musk, born in South Africa but granted Canadian citizenship through his mother, who was born in Saskatchewan, responded to the petition with his controversial statement. The petitioners have called on the Canadian Prime Minister to revoke Musk's Canadian passport and dual citizenship, citing concerns over his actions and foreign influence on Canadian elections.
The petition will be presented in the House of Commons once it closes on June 20. Musk’s comment has reignited debates around his involvement with political figures like Trump, who has previously suggested making Canada the 51st state of the U.S. and threatened tariffs on Canadian goods.
