Last week, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company has sold over a million pairs of its Augmented Reality-enabled Ray-Ban smart glasses, with plans to eventually sell "hundreds of millions and ultimately billions" of AI-powered glasses, reports The Indian Express.
Now, the company is reportedly planning to expand its footprint in the wearable segment by launching “half a dozen” more devices this year. According to Business Insider, the head of Meta’s Reality Labs Andrew Bosworth recently shared an internal memo with employees.
Titled “2025: The Year of Greatness”, the memo suggests that Meta is planning to launch a new AI-powered augmented reality-based smart glass with a built-in display. Code-named “Hypernova”, the smart glasses will have a display on the bottom of the right lens that will display information like notifications, show photos taken by the device and help translate conversations in real time.
However, due to the addition of a display, some employees who are part of the project stated that the smart glasses would cost somewhere around $1,000.
The company is also working on Oakley-branded smart glasses for athletes and cyclists with a camera that shifts to the center of the frame. As for the remaining products, it looks like Meta will be launching different styles of glasses, which similar to the Ray-Ban Wayfarer smart glasses could come in “Skylar” and “Headliner” options.
Apart from new smart glasses, Meta is also reportedly testing a wrist strap called “Ceres” that can help control the glasses. This might be bundled in with Hypernova, the upcoming smart glass with a display. For years, the company has been also exploring the smartwatch space, but it looks like 2025 might be the year the company finally decides to take on smartwatch giants like Apple, Samsung and Google.
It is still uncertain how many of these products will be hitting shelves, but Meta’s rapid advancement in smart glasses and the AR industry might force other companies to launch similar products at an affordable price tag.
