Bangladesh’s first-ever Super Over in international cricket ended in a narrow loss to West Indies in the dramatic second ODI of the three-match series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Tuesday.
Both teams finished level on 213 runs in regulation play, forcing the historic Super Over.
In the Super Over, West Indies batted first, with Shai Hope and Brandon King scoring 10 runs off Mustafizur Rahman.
Bangladesh, chasing a target of 11, managed only 9 runs, as Soumya Sarkar, Saif Hassan, and Najmul Hossain Shanto failed to capitalize on opportunities against slow left arm bowler Akeal Hosein, handing West Indies their first win of the series.
Earlier, winning the toss Bangladesh posted 213 for 7 in 50 overs. Soumya Sarkar top-scored with 45, while skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz (32*) and Rishad Hossain (39*) added crucial late runs. Saif Hassan (6), Towhid Hridoy (12), and Najmul Hossain Shanto (15) fell cheaply, and Mahidul Islam Ankon contributed 17. Nurul Hasan Sohan scored 23, and Nasum Ahmed added 14.
West Indies struggled early, losing Brandon King in the first over, but Alick Athanaze and Keacy Carty steadied the innings. Rishad Hossain triggered a mini-collapse, dismissing Athanaze and Carty. Shai Hope led a late recovery, scoring 53* and forging partnerships with Justin Greaves (26) and Akeal Hosein (16) to tie the match and force the Super Over.
In the final over of regulation, West Indies needed 5 runs to win, and captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz entrusted Saif Hassan to defend the target. Saif bowled dot balls on the first two deliveries, while Akeal Hosein and Shai Hope ran a single each on the third and fourth balls. On the fifth ball, Saif bowled out Akeal Hosein, leaving 3 runs required off the last ball. Khary Pierre miscued the final delivery, sending it high in the air. Wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan Sohan ran to take the catch but failed to secure it, allowing West Indies to take 2 runs, tie the match, and force Bangladesh’s first-ever Super Over across all three formats.
The series decider will take place on 23 October at the same ground.
