Bangladesh produced a disciplined bowling display to restrict Sri Lanka to 202 runs in 48.4 overs in their crucial Women’s ODI World Cup encounter at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai- a total that gives the Tigresses a strong chance to stay alive in the tournament, reports the Daily Sun.
After Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu won the toss and opted to bat first, Bangladesh struck immediately as Marufa Akter dismissed Vishmi Gunaratne with the very first ball of the innings.
Athapaththu responded with a counterattacking 46, while Hasini Perera held the innings together with a patient 85, but Bangladesh’s bowlers ensured wickets fell at regular intervals to keep the scoring in check.
Nilakshika Silva’s 37 was the only other notable contribution as Sri Lanka struggled to build meaningful partnerships.
For Bangladesh, young all-rounder Shorna Akter was the standout performer, finishing with figures of 3 for 27. Leg-spinner Rabeya Khan supported well with 2 for 39, while Marufa Akter, Nahida Akter, and Nishita Akter Nishi claimed a wicket apiece in what was a complete team effort.
Bowling out Sri Lanka for 202, the Tigresses have given themselves a realistic target to chase — one that could keep their semifinal dreams very much alive if they hold their nerve with the bat.
