Serena Williams stated that she had a benign branchial cyst, which was “the size of a small grapefruit,” removed from her neck and that everything is fine.
The 43-year-old retired tennis star took to social media to share her experience, revealing that she discovered the lump in May. After an MRI, she was advised that removal wasn't necessary at the time, but as it continued to grow, further tests were conducted, reports AP.
Williams received a biopsy that was negative for cancer, leading her doctors to recommend the procedure. She posted a video from her hospital bed, expressing her gratitude: “I am feeling so grateful and fortunate that everything worked out, and most of all, I’m healthy.”
In another post, she mentioned she is “still recovering but getting better,” emphasizing that health is her top priority.
Williams announced her retirement, saying she was “evolving” away from professional tennis, just before her last tournament at the 2022 U.S. Open.
