Suchitra Sen remains one of the most luminous and enduring legends of Indian cinema. With her unmatched screen presence, expressive eyes, and powerful performances, she redefined the portrayal of women in Bengali and Hindi films. At a time when female characters were often confined to stereotypes, Suchitra Sen brought depth, dignity, and emotional complexity to the screen.
From intense romantic dramas to socially conscious narratives, her films continue to captivate audiences across generations. Today is the 12th death anniversary of Suchitra Sen. On the occasion, here are five iconic movies that showcase the brilliance and timeless appeal of the legendary Bengali film actress.
Deep Jwele Jai
In this 1959 movie, Suchitra Sen played a nurse in a psychiatric hospital. Her character must provide emotional support to traumatised patients, yet is forbidden from forming any real attachment. The role demanded extraordinary emotional depth, and Suchitra delivered it flawlessly. Her nuanced performance captured the silent suffering, inner conflicts, and eventual heartbreak of a woman trapped between duty and human emotion.
Aandhi
Aandhi was a political drama which released in 1975. Directed by Gulzar, the movie saw Suchitra Sen play a politician’s daughter who falls in love with and marries JK (played by Sanjeev Kumar). However, the couple eventually separates and years later, Sen’s character is an established politician. Despite feeling closeness to her ex-husband, Sen’s character is unable to express her emotions.
Chawa Pawa
Chawa Pawa, released in 1959, is a comedy drama film where Sen plays Manju, the only daughter of a newspaper tycoon in Calcutta. Manju is a headstrong girl who defies her father to run away with a reporter Rajat. Rajat and Manju decide to claim the bounty that her rich father has put on her head and they have increasingly absurd adventures, after which they find themselves falling in love. The movie might ring some bells - the plot is an almost exact copy of that of Frank Capra’s It Happened One Night, which released in 1934.
Devdas
In the original Devdas, Sen played Paro - a role which was her Bollywood debut. Suchitra paired up with Dilip Kumar (Devdas) for the film. The film is still considered a classic, and was ranked by Indiatimes Movies as among the Top 25 Must See Bollywood Films.
Harano Sur
Harano Sur was a Bengali romantic drama made in 1957. Sen played Roma, a doctor who rescues an amnesiac - played by Uttam Kumar - and falls in love with him. They marry, but a second incident makes him recall his original life as a rich businessman in Calcutta, and he forgets the new memories he forged with Roma. Roma then becomes a governess for his children, hoping that she will be able to jog his memory.
Suchitra Sen last featured in the 1978 flop “Pranoy Pasha” opposite Soumitro Chatterjee, after which she retired from both the big screen as well as public life.
