Walt Disney has agreed to pay a $10 million civil penalty to resolve allegations that it violated child privacy laws on videos uploaded to YouTube, the U.S. Department of Justice said on Tuesday, reports Reuters.
The DOJ alleged that Disney Worldwide Services and Disney Entertainment Operations failed to label some videos as “Made for Kids,” allowing personal data from children under 13 to be collected and used for targeted advertising.
The settlement requires Disney to implement a compliance program for the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule (COPPA), which mandates parental notification and consent before collecting data from children. The case was referred to the DOJ by the Federal Trade Commission.
