The year 2025 brought deep sorrow to Bangladesh’s entertainment industry as several beloved actors, musicians, and cultural figures passed away. Their absence leaves a lasting void, but their art and contributions will continue to inspire generations to come. Here are few notable figures, whom we lost in 2025.
Prabir Mitra: National Film Award-winning legendary actor Prabir Mitra passed away on 5 January. He debuted in film acting through “Jolchhobi” and worked in over 400 films in his career. He got acclaimation for his performance in the film “Nawab Sirajuddaula” (1989).
Anjana Sultana: Noted actress Anjana Sultana passed away on 4 January at the age of 59. The National film Award-winning artiste began her acting career in 1976 with the film “Setu” but her breakthrough came with the movie “Matir Maya” in the same year. She performed in more than 300 films.
Zahidur Rahim Anjan: “Meghmallar”-famed director Zahidur Rahim Anjan died on 24 February. Anjan received the National Film Award for Best Director and Best Dialogue Writer for “Meghmallar” in 2014. His latest film “Chander Amabasya” is awaiting release.
Sanjida Khatun: Eminent cultural personality and president of Chhayanaut Sanjida Khatun passed away on 25 March. Sanjida Khatun was one of the founders of the Bangladesh Mukti Sangrami Shilpi Sangsha during the Liberation War in 1971 and Chhayanaut in the early 1960s. She was honoured with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India.
Gulshan Ara Ahmed: Television and film artiste Gulshan Ara Ahmed passed away on 15 April while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka. She was 59 years old.
Mustafa Zaman Abbasi: Country’s renowned musicologist and author Mustafa Zaman Abbasi passed away on 10 May. Abbasi, son of folk singer-composer Abbas Uddin Ahmed, was born on 8 December 1936. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 1995.
Hamiduzzaman Khan: Renowned Bangladeshi sculptor and painter Hamiduzzaman Khan died on 20 July while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital. His major sculptures include Ekattorer Shmorone, Songshoptok, Hamla, Pakhi Poribar and Shantir Payra. In 1988, he gained international recognition when his sculpture “Steps” was installed at the Olympic Sculpture Park in Seoul of South Korea. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2006.
Farida Parveen: Renowned Lalon singer Farida Parveen passed away on 13 September at the age of 71. She her musical journey with Nazrul and patriotic songs before devoting her life to Lalon’s works. Farida was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 1987 for her contributions to music, and in 2008 she received the Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize from the Japanese government.
Rakib Hasan: Thriller series “Tin Goyenda” author Rakib Hasan passed away on 15 October. Born on 12 December 1950, in Cumilla, Rakib Hasan began his writing career as a translator of world-famous classic novels under Sheba Prokashoni. He authored over 400 books, including the “Tin Goyenda” series.
We also lost classical music maestro Amaresh Roy Chowdhury, folk singer Shushama Das, film editor Mujibur Rahman Dulu, actress Tanin Rahman Subha, singers Zeenat Rehana, Janes Sumon, AK Ratul, photographer Chanchal Mahmud in 2025.
