Moviegoers in Dhaka can once again immerse themselves in the world of Pandora as Avatar: Fire and Ash, the highly anticipated third instalment of James Cameron’s landmark science-fiction franchise, was released worldwide on Friday and began screening in the capital the same day.
Star Cineplex announced the release through its “Now Showing” campaign, stating that the film will initially run in its Dhaka theatres from December 19 to December 24.
James Cameron first revolutionised modern cinema with Avatar in 2009, which earned approximately $2.9 billion and held the record as the highest-grossing film of all time for years. Its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, released in 2022, continued the franchise’s success by grossing around $2.3 billion globally. Just three years later, Cameron returns with Fire and Ash, aiming to elevate the cinematic experience once again.
The film has already drawn praise following special screenings in London, with critics describing it as more than just a movie — a fully immersive big-screen experience that reinforces the enduring appeal of cinema.
Narratively, Fire and Ash ventures into darker territory. The story unfolds in the aftermath of the death of Neteyam, the eldest son of the Sully family, introducing grief as a central theme. Audiences are also introduced to a new group of Na’vi known as the “Ash People,” whose fire-driven identity challenges traditional notions of heroism and villainy and reveals a darker side of Pandora’s inhabitants.
Starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, and Oona Chaplin, and powered by James Cameron’s signature visual spectacle and action, Avatar: Fire and Ash is expected to spark strong box-office performance and further cement the franchise’s legacy.
