The much-awaited film will mark the reunion of Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi, and will be directed by Rajkumar Hirani, with Vidhu Vinod Chopra backing the project.
The original 3 Idiots, released in 2009 was grossing over ₹390 crore globally and leaving a lasting impact on both critics and fans. Known for its humor, emotional depth, and strong social messages, the film remains one of Bollywood’s most iconic hits.
According to sources close to the project, the script for 3 Idiots 2 has been locked, and the team is thrilled about it. A source revealed to Pinkvilla, "They feel the magic of the first film has returned, and it is as funny, emotional, and meaningful as the original."
A source close to the development revealed that the sequel will go on floors in the second half of 2026.
The plot of the sequel will continue the story nearly 15 years after the characters went their separate ways at the end of 3 Idiots, reuniting them for a new adventure.
Rajkumar Hirani, who had long considered a sequel, reportedly saw the timing as perfect, especially after he and Aamir Khan paused work on their much-awaited biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke due to script concerns.
Hirani had always wanted to ensure that the sequel stood up to the legacy of the original, dedicating time to develop a full-fledged screenplay.
Though no official announcement has been made yet, news of the 3 Idiots reunion has already generated a buzz across social media, with fans eagerly anticipating the return of the iconic characters.
