Following a powerful earthquake that caused widespread devastation in Myanmar, the Department of Fire Service and Civil Defence has issued a warning about potential tremors in Bangladesh.
In a press release, the department urged the public and relevant stakeholders to take precautionary measures to mitigate the impact of possible earthquakes, reports UNB.
The key recommendations include:
Building earthquake-resistant structures: Adhering to the Bangladesh National Building Code (2020) for earthquake-resistant construction.
Reinforcing vulnerable buildings: Repairing and strengthening old and at-risk structures.
Enhancing fire prevention systems: Strengthening fire safety measures in multi-storey and commercial buildings.
Securing utility services: Ensuring the safety of gas, water, and electricity lines.
Conducting drills and awareness campaigns: Organizing regular earthquake preparedness drills at individual and institutional levels.
Displaying emergency contact numbers: Clearly posting essential emergency numbers in public and private buildings.
Training volunteers: Promoting disaster response training for volunteers.
Stocking emergency supplies: Keeping essentials like flashlights, radios (with spare batteries), whistles, hammers, helmets/cushions, non-perishable food, clean water, medicines, first-aid kits, and child care supplies in designated areas at home.
Cooperating with monitoring agencies: Assisting authorities in disaster monitoring and preparedness efforts.
