Former Army Chief and one of the prominent sector commanders of the Liberation War, retired Major General K. M. Shafiullah, has passed away. He breathed his last on Sunday morning while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in the capital
It has been reported that the Shafiullah had been ill for a long time, suffering from diabetes, hypertension, thyroid complications, fatty liver, dementia, and various other health issues. For an extended period, he required a stretcher for mobility.
At the beginning of the Liberation War, Shafiullah was the commander of Sector 3. Later, when three regular army brigades (known as forces) were formed, Shafiullah was placed in charge of the ‘S’ Force. For his significant contributions to the Liberation War, he was awarded the title of "Bir Uttam."
Born on September 2, 1934, in Rupganj, Narayanganj, K. M. Shafiullah served as the Chief of Army Staff (from 1972 to 1975) after the country gained independence. Subsequently, he represented Bangladesh as an ambassador in various countries, including Malaysia, Canada, Sweden, and England. Upon returning to Bangladesh in 1991, he was kept as an OSD (Officer on Special Duty) for a year. The following year, he voluntarily retired.
