The government is mulling to increase the price of electricity from next March, after a year, to deal with the pressure of depreciation of the local currency against the dollar, reports Daily Sun.
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader made the hint while addressing a press conference held at party President Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office in Dhaka on Saturday.
“We gave enough subsidies in electricity, now we want to reduce it gradually. The price adjustment has become urgent in the sector. The adjustment must be made if we want to ensure the existing electricity facilities,” he said.
There was load shedding across the country for at least 18 hours a day when BNP was in power and the then government increased electricity prices nine times during its five-year tenure, said Quader.
Earlier in March 2023, the electricity price was increased at the retail level and the then government said that it was part of regular price adjustments.
