The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday revealed the identities of eight Bangladesh nationals who drowned after their vessel capsized in the Mediterranean off the coast of Tunisia, reports Daily Sun.
The boat, carrying 52 passengers of various nationalities and the captain, set sail for Europe from Zuwara in Libya around 11:30 pm on 14 February and sank off the Tunisian coast around 4:30am on 15 February.
Eight Bangladeshis and a Pakistan citizen died in the incident. Forty-four people, including 27 from Bangladesh, eight from Pakistan, five from Syria, three from Egypt, and the captain, also an Egyptian, were rescued.
The deceased Bangladeshis are – Nayan Biswas, son of Paritosh Biswas, Kazi Sajib, son of Kazi Mizanur, Sajal, Mamun Sheikh, and Kaysar, residents of Rajoir upazila in Madaripur, and Rifat, son of Dadan, Imrul Kayes Apan, son of Md Pannu Sheikh, and Russel, of Muksudpur upazila in Gopalganj.
Besides, Manatosh Sarker, son of Manaranjan Sarker, a resident of Rajoir upazila, was undergoing treatment at a hospital in critical condition, the ministry said.
The Bangladesh Embassy in Libya is working to send the bodies home following the local legal procedures, it added.
