Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi on Thursday hoped that the market of wheat will become normal as businessmen started to import wheat from some countries including Canada due to the Russia-Ukraine war.
He came up with the hope while answering questions from journalists after the 4th meeting of the task force formed to monitor the price trend of some basic commodities in the markets and review them at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
The commerce minister said a ship loaded with 55,000 tonnes of wheat is on the way to Bangladesh. However, Ukraine is the main wheat exporter in Bangladesh. The market will be stable if wheat comes from Ukraine. Businessmen now are importing wheat from Canada at a high rate as an alternative market. Many businessmen committed to importing wheat. They can import what amount they want.
About the hike of lentil prices at Tk 10 per kg in the last 2-3 days, the minister said the government is selling lentils through TCB at a fair price. However, Tariff Commission will investigate the incident whether it is logical or not.
Tipu Munshi also said the concerned ministry will take action about stopping the supply of gas to the vehicles and supply these to the industry.
